Getting Started

On this page

#1. Install the two plugins

PRO is an add-on: the translation engine lives in the free plugin, and PRO adds the extra models,
the glossary and automatic translation on top of it. You need both.

  1. Plugins → Add New, search for LATW AI Translation for WPML, install and activate it.
  2. Plugins → Add New → Upload Plugin, upload the PRO .zip from your account, and activate it.

#2. Enter your AI provider’s API key

Navigate to AI Translator → Settings → General, pick your provider and paste your API key.

You bring your own key, so the translations are billed to you by OpenAI, Anthropic, Google or DeepL
directly — the plugin itself never charges per translation.

There is one way to translate that needs no key at all: connecting the site to Claude or ChatGPT and
translating from inside the conversation, where the assistant does the work and nothing is billed
per translation. See Translating from Claude and ChatGPT (MCP). Everything else on this page
assumes a provider key.

#2.1. Check your target languages

Under AI Translator → Settings → Translation → Target Languages you will find every language
WPML is set up for already ticked.

#2.2. Add website context (Optional)

Under AI Translator → Settings → Translation → Website Description, describe what your website
is about and how it serves your audience. The AI is given this on every translation, which helps it
pick the right tone and terminology.

#3. Enter License Key

Navigate to AI Translator → Settings → License Key and paste your licence key from
the platform.

Without an active licence the plugins still translate, using the free models — the PRO features are
what stop working. It is worth knowing which ones before your licence ever lapses:

  • Claude and DeepL are no longer offered, and a site set to one of them falls back to OpenAI. If
you want translation to carry on uninterrupted, keep an OpenAI key saved.
  • The glossary is locked. Your terms stay in place; they simply stop being sent to the AI.
  • The prompt goes back to the built-in one.
  • Outdated translations are re-translated in full rather than only where they changed, so an
update costs what a first translation costs.
  • Automatic translation, bulk translation stop.

Nothing is deleted at any point. Your Claude and DeepL keys, your prompt, your glossary and your
settings all stay exactly where they are, and renewing brings them straight back. Translations
already sent to Claude or DeepL are collected as normal, whatever your licence does in the meantime
— you are never billed for work you cannot receive.

One thing to watch if you sell with WooCommerce: while the licence is inactive, product translations
saved in the background are not topped up with stock, attributes and variations, because that sync
is part of PRO too. Re-saving the product once the licence is back restores it.

#4. Translate

Open AI Translator → Translations, select your content and submit it for translation.

What actually gets sent — the content, the custom fields, the SEO title and description — is decided
by WPML’s own settings. If something comes back untranslated, What Gets Translated? explains why
and where to change it.

If you would rather translate from Claude or ChatGPT, using the subscription you already pay for
instead of an API key, set that up under AI Translator → Settings → MCP — see
Translating from Claude and ChatGPT (MCP).
