Using Your Own API Key
On this page
Available from the Solo plan.
Instead of paying with LATW Credits, a site can translate on your own API key. The AI provider
bills you directly, at its own prices and under your own rate limits, and nothing is taken from your
Credits balance. What you pay LATW is the plan.
At the moment the only provider is OpenAI. Claude and Gemini are coming soon.
#Adding a key
- Create a key in your OpenAI account:
https://platform.openai.com/api-keys. - In the panel, open API keys and press Add key.
- Give it a Label you will recognise — for example the client it belongs to — choose the
Provider and paste the API key.
Keys are encrypted and decrypted only by the translation service. After saving, the panel
shows only the label and the last four characters; the key itself cannot be read back.
You can add several keys, one per client for example, and give each site a different one.
#Using a key on a site
Open the site’s Settings, choose Your key under AI source and pick the key in the field
below it. Every job on the site then uses that key — including jobs started in WordPress.
For a single job, the New job window lets you choose LATW Credits or Your key whatever the
site’s default is. Your key is offered only when the site has a key picked in its Settings —
the job uses that key.
#What it costs
- The provider’s price, not LATW’s. OpenAI bills your key for every request, including the
retries LATW Cloud makes when an answer comes back broken. - No estimate in dollars. The New job window counts the words, but the cost is up to your
provider. - The panel shows an approximation. Each job, and each key under API keys, shows what this
month’s usage would cost at the provider’s list prices, worked out from the tokens. Your
provider’s invoice is the final figure. - Batch mode halves the provider’s price on your key too.
Budget limits apply to jobs on your own key as well, counted on this approximate cost and
separately from what you spend in LATW Credits — see Site Settings.
#Editing and deleting a key
Edit changes the label or replaces the key — leave the key field empty to keep the current one.
Delete removes it for good. API keys shows which sites use each key; check them before
deleting, since a site needs another key or LATW Credits to keep translating.
#When your plan ends
Your keys stay saved but cannot be used, and sites set to Your key translate with LATW Credits
instead. See Plans.
